What was the experience like collaborating with BSlade?
It’s a trip! That’s big bro! Seriously, being able to work with someone you’ve looked up to and been inspired by for most of your life doesn’t happen for most. His energy is infectious and he’s king of being out the box, which is exactly what we needed for this video shoot. On top of that, he’s freaking hilarious; a maniac on stage or on camera, but humble and chill when off. This isn’t actually the first song we’ve collaborated on. We’ve worked on a few things, but our first cut together was a song he featured me on called “Black Lives Matter” for his project called the Black Belt. “Come Together” is the first audio and visual collab we’ve done.
What is the message that you want listeners to take from this song?
It’s ok to be different. Please don’t be a conformist; it’s boring. However the power that we have when we come together (no pun intended), when we truly see one another beyond the differences, past the fear mongering and politics, we make change happen. Most of the lyrics sound like nonsense, much like the noise of the world today; but the one part that people around the world know is “Come Together”. Isn’t that what we still need to do?
What upcoming music projects do you have?
Well, I’m dropping a few summer singles in the coming months. Something to keep the blocks even hotter, haha! Mainly more performances coming up. May 9th I’m headlining at the Viper Room in Hollywood, May 9th. June 14th I’ll be performing at the Women in Entertainment Luncheon, and sometime around my birthday - June 19th - I’ll be having a birthday showcase featuring some artists, bands, and producers I’ve worked with so far in my career. In July, BET should be launching their brand new music competition series, The Next Big Thing, which you can catch ya girl on as well.
Who's idea was it for the music video & how did that represent the message expressed in the single?
My manager came to me one day and said, “What if we shoot it in a crazy house?”. That was all the catalyst I needed to get my mind going. He knows I’m not afraid of wild concepts as long as they serve a purpose. As unorthodox as the music was, the visuals had to bring more, ya know? Who’s one of the most ostracized sections of society? Those who suffer from mental illness or disease. So you’ve got 2 outcasts, put away from society’s view, trying to talk some positive good sense about unifying and coming together. How crazy must the world be when the ones in the nut house start making sense? Hehe.
